2011 achievements for animals

Jan 9, 2012

Thanks to the dedication and generosity of compassionate animal lovers like you, WSPA provided life-saving care, relief and an end to cruelty to hundreds of thousands of animals in need in 2011.

As a token of our deep appreciation of your support, we have created a special 2011 achievements video to share how your generous donations have enabled WSPA to carry on our life-saving work.

2011 highlights

Choose cage-free eggs

In 2011, we encouraged five Canadian schools to phase-out their use of eggs from caged hens, meaning about 400,000 eggs annually will now come from hens that have the freedom to move, stretch their wings and nest.

More than 30,000 people took action to support WSPA’s Million Egg Challenge asking McDonald’s Canada to make the switch to cage-free eggs. Thanks to this overwhelming support, Canada’s biggest egg purchaser met with WSPA to hear our solutions for reducing animal suffering in their supply chain.

Nine bears rescued from bear baiting

Thanks to your support, WSPA rescued nine bears this year from the cruel blood sport of bear baiting, and gave them a safe home at the WSPA-funded Balkasar sanctuary in Pakistan, away from the brutality and fear that they had endured throughout their lives for so long.

Saving animals in disaster zones

Unfortunately, our disaster response team have had a busy year. We’ve been fighting the effects of floodwater across the world, sending rescue teams out to help animals in Thailand, Central America, Vietnam and India to name but a few. You also enabled us to respond to the aftermath of the devastating tsunami in Japan, record-levels of droughts in Eastern Africa, and a volcanic eruption in Chile. In all, with your support we helped more than 230,000 animals in 11 countries.

Stopping the cruel killing of millions of dogs

Every year, 20 million dogs are being brutally killed, with rabies control often cited as an excuse. In 2010, we funded Bali’s first island-wide mass vaccination program, which saw approximately 210,000 dogs vaccinated against rabies. In 2011 on World Rabies Day, your support enabled us to begin rolling this project out globally.

Bear cub rescued from a life of dancing

In September 2011, we brought you news of a dramatic rescue of a one-year-old bear cub in India, spared from a life of captivity and suffering as a ‘dancing’ bear in India, thanks to WSPA supporters. A huge thanks to all WSPA supporters who helped to raise money to protect bear cubs from being forced to dance – and keep them in the wild where they belong.

These are just a few of the things you’ve helped us achieve in 2011, and with your help, we believe 2012 will be even more amazing. Thank you.
